Drywall is an economical material used for building houses. Because drywall is made out of paper and plaster, it is plain. Improve its appearance by painting it, but even then it may be lacking. Adding texture to the wall using joint compound is an inexpensive way to improve drywall appearance. Watered-down joint compound is spread along the wall using a sprayer or paint roller.

Step 1

Pour half of a 30 lb. bucket of joint compound into an empty 5-gallon bucket.

Step 2

Pour 1 pint of water into the joint compound.

Step 3

Attach a mixing paddle to a drill. Place the mixing paddle into the bucket and press the button to turn the mixing paddle. Mix until the compound is the consistency of oatmeal.

Step 4

Pour the joint compound into a paint tray.

Step 5

Slide a plastic loop roller over a paint roller.

Step 6

Dip the roller into the joint compound and spread it onto the wall, starting in a corner and working up the wall. Overlap each pass to get the best coverage.
