A variety of plants will grow vertically along a fence or trellis if you provide a sturdy support. Whether you wish to grow grapes, raspberries or vining flowers, adding a simple trellis will give creeping and climbing plants a structure to grasp as they grow. With basic construction skills, you can build a trellis with wire between two posts to support garden climbers. When your plants have adequate support, they should flourish energetically.

Determine the placement of the trellis and the spacing you desire between the two posts. Position the posts where you want them and drive them at least 6 to 8 inches into the ground with the post driver.
Measure the distance between the fence posts with the tape measure and add 8 inches to this measurement. Use the wire cutter to cut four lengths of the galvanized wire equal to the adjusted measurement.
Position one wire around one of the fence posts about 12 inches above the soil level and wrap the wire around the post tightly. Place the post clip around the fence post and the wire and twist the ends of the post clip with the pliers to secure the wire tightly to the fence post.
Stretch the wire straight across to the second fence post, positioning it 12 inches above the soil also. Wrap the wire around the post in the same fashion and secure it with another post clip. Tighten the post clip with the pliers.
Position another wire around one of the fence posts 24 inches above the first wire and secure it with another post clip. Stretch the wire straight across to the other fence post, again 24 inches above the first wire. Secure the wire to the fence post with another post clip.
Connect the third wire around both fence posts about 2 inches below the tops of the posts using the same connection process.
Add the fourth wire to the fence posts halfway between the top wire and the wire below using the same connection process.
If you need vertical wires connecting the horizontal wires, cut lengths of wire about 6 inches longer than the distance between the wires. Position the wires where you want them and twist the vertical wires tightly around the horizontal wires using the pliers.
