Chiffons are swept with water and paint to create soft designs.
Chiffon is a lightweight and sheer fabric made from cottons, synthetic fibers and silks. This fabric is easily dyed, but you can also use a painting technique similar to watercolor. Dyes or paints are diluted with alcohol or water, respectively, to create a soft sweeping of color over the fabric. This method can be used at home to embellish any chiffon fabrics like curtains, scarves and dresses.
Video of the Day
Step 1
Trace or draw a design lightly onto the chiffon, using a pencil. This will serve as a design guide.
Step 2
Secure the fabric design area between the hoop layers. Pull the edges outside of the hoop to tighten the design area.
Step 3
Fill the spray bottle with water. Spray the hooped design area lightly to dampen, but not soak, the fabric.
Step 4
Dip the paint brush into water, then the paint. Gently stroke the color onto the fabric. The color will expand and bleed to create a blend of shades on the dampened fabric. Repeat this painting technique until design is filled.
Step 5
Let it dry completely. Wash according to individual care instructions.
Tip
For an all-over color or marbled look on chiffon, dribble larger amounts of paint over the entire fabric. The colors will expand and blend together to create an all-over watercolor effect.
